Telephony

Does anbody know if I can use my data modem as a TAPI device to dial out of netsuite?  I have downloaded the quickdial tool from exceletel and it detects my data modem and dials out.  I have configured my telephony preferences accordingly, installed the drivers, etc... but when I click on the dial link in netsuite nothing happens.  We are able dial out of outlook this way - but not netsuite.  This is a huge concern for our sales reps.  I am not familiar with telephony or the alphabet soup that goes along with it.  Any ideas?
