nlobjRecord.getFieldText not working - throwing [object Object] error

I just tried using getFieldText and it throws an [object Object] error

// from within client-side form script
var recd = nlapiLoadRecord('customer',123);
// on a list/record field
try { var recdval = recd.getFieldText('fieldid'); } catch(e) {
alert('Error: '+(e.message?e.message:e));
}

Throws error but no message : [object Object]

As far as I can see in help docs, this should be available and working, but is blowing up my code. Am I missing something?
