Creating a custom button to "mark all" in a column field

I am a little bit more new to scripting than the rest of you I am sure, but I am curious to know if there is a way to create a custom button that will "mark all" in a column field. For example, if there is a column called "Commit Items" and I want a quick way to check all seeing that there are 300+ parts, how would I go about doing that in the easiest way? Help!:eek:
