Invalid custrecord_contact2 reference key

I'm attempting to upload a CSV file to a custom record to create marketing tasks, however when I upload there are randomly some that wont upload.

The format (spacing) for the records is the same, there's nothing different between the ones that work and the ones that wont.

I've read that using external ID will probably be the best way, however I'm pretty certain that I need to upload with the same format that is in the UI...? I need to have the contact name appear in the UI and not just the ID number.

Anyone got anything?
