about print label

Currently, we are using upc code to label our products and materials, however you know registering upc codes cost money. And we started to use internal serial numbers which is assigned by us. Here comes the problem, if we use this code, the bar code can not be generated when we click print label. Is there a way to generate bar codes even if we do not use upc code?
