Customers with Other Relationship - Vendor or Partner

We have customers who are also vendors. Our Sales people need to be able to access and create e-mails and activities for the customers but do not have permission to view vendor records. The problem we are now having is that our sales people can not access the records of these customers who are also vendors.

This is a problem... Has anyone had to deal with this before?? If so, is there a solution for this besides keeping vendor and customer records completely separate??
