Suitelet from Portlet no longer opens in own window/tab

I have a portlet that performs a search and if nothing found, returns an error message in the same portlet window. If the search finds something, then it would open a suitelet list in a new window/tab.

Now with 2011.1 just upgraded last night, the suitelet ALWAYS opens right in the same portlet window. This is not desireable and worked fine in 2010.2. I know it is because I am not setting a target on the form in the portlet, but I can't do that because I want the error (nothing found) to be returned in the same portlet window and ONLY open the suitelet in its own window/tab if there are search results.
