Subitem Of Troubleshooting

When trying to use the 'Subitem of' field, it seems as though an 'Inventory Item' page can only look up other 'Inventory Items' and an 'Assembly/Bill of Materials' can only look up other 'Assembly/Bill of Materials'.  Is there a way to have a parent item of an 'Inventory Item' to be an 'Assembly/Bill of Materials' Part Number instead?
