Mass Update - new custom field not showing?

I have created a new custom field and it does not appear inMass Update. I can export all the items to a csv and then import the items and set the parameter at the import stage. This seems a waste of resources, Mass Update is a more elegant solution.

Is there a reason why a custom field does not appear in Mass Update? The field is a drop down list.
