Perform calculation on two currency fields - Advanced PDF - Freemarker

I am attempting to calculate a customer's available credit, using advanced pdf forms, from values on the customer record.  I have found that I cannot directly access the balance and unbilled orders fields on the customer record.  Therefore, I created a workaround in the form of a scheduled script which updates my custom fields (which I can access) every 15 minutes.   OK, I got that part done and can access the fields.  Now the problem is that I cannot perform a calculation.  The fields I am referencing are formatted as currency (I cannot change to number because they must match
