Using CRMSDK tags in a Letter Template

I am trying to create a new letter template which contains 3 CRMSDK tags.  I am following the directions in SuiteAnswers.  But when I am in a customer record and want to create a letter using the template, the document created contains the tags and not the values that should be substituted.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
