Phone Numbers not attaching to Orders

We have been using netsuite for about 8 years. All of a sudden, orders are coming through without customer phone numbers - netsuite is no longer making this field mandatory when customers register and order. Needless to say, this is causing a lot of problems.

I contacted netsuite support and they said that field is no longer mandatory, and there is nothing they can do, we'd have to write a custom field and script for it to be required. This is mind-boggling to me. How can netsuite not have the functionality to require customers to put their phone number in when ordering?
