Cart update failed. Item XXXX does not exist

Some customers have reported they can not add items to the cart.  The error is "Cart update failed. Item XXXX does not exist", where the X's are the item number.  It does not seem to be browser specific as I have it fail with Mozilla but another PC with Mozilla does not.  However it seems to work in all versions of Chrome we've tried so far.
