Promotion on Estimates

I'm having some trouble with Promotions on an Estimate. I'm able to add the code to Estimate.promotionsList.promotions and see the discount on Estimate.discountTotal after I pull the estimate back down. Everything shows up fine if I check the estimate out in the console. What I'm missing is if I add a promo that's not valid for the order (item restriction, total not met) there doesn't seem to be any feed back across the api that the code isn't being applied. In the console there is a "Status" column that would do if I could access that. Am I just missing
