XML export of search or report

We have been asked by our customer to create an XML file of some inventory information that is stored within NetSuite.  I can pull together a search or report to get the information I need.  I know that it is possible to export this to a CSV or Excel file, however is there also a way to export the data to an XML file?  I know when I export to Excel, when I go to save the file, the file type defaults to XML.  Is this really then being exported as an XML file?
