Can no longer change status of client record via import

Ever since "upgrading" to 2010.1 we are no longer able to assign any status to a customer record. Previously we were able to change the status of a Prospect to a Lead if we needed to (so that we could reassign the records). Now, we do not have that ability.
Example: We have old records in the system that are Prospect records that we would like to reassign via CSV and change their status to Lead so that they will go through routing rules. We also tend to append records using this method, so it's a 'catch all' way for us to update our existing records. If you try to update Prospect records and change their status to Lead, the import will fail.
