Transaction data migration

While the sanity (or lack there of) of wanting to pull in multiple years of transactional data into NetSuite as part of an implementation seems to be a big question, given that is the goal, does anyone have any guidelines on the best process / sequence in order to accomplish this effectively?  The complication I see is on the inventory side that is created via a mfg process.  How would we go about importing that level of data in order to then have inventory to create sales orders / shipment records / invoices against?  Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly welcomed!
