Private/Internal Use Only custom fields

Is there any way to add a custom transaction field that doesn't show up on the webcart / my account pages? 

For example, we can add a custom transaction body field on sales orders that is for internal use only; but if customers have rights to enter sales orders on the 'My Accounts' section they'll be able to see and modify this field.
