"\" character added to the end of entity text

I am trying to programatically set the "Payee" field of a bill. However whenever I set the text field using

nlapiSetFieldText('entity', 'Payee Name');

The name shows up as "Payee Name\" in the Payee field and consequently the search for that name fails.

Has anyone else seen this before? Is there a fix for it? nlapiSetFieldValue() doesnt work.
