Auto Customer ID format

Is there a way to change the format of the Auto Customer ID?

We would like it to have the following format:  Last, First
Or because of similar names: Last, First - City, State

Is there a setting to do this?  If not, would it cause any problems if I did this with SuiteScript?

Is anyone else doing anything similar?
