Setting custom State/Province List Fields

I'm working on a client side script, and I'm trying to set a custom field that has a list of values from the newly exposed State/Province list. I'm grabbing the value from the customer's default shipping state, and trying to populate it on the sales order in a custom field. It sounds simple, but I'm running into major problems.
I've tried both nlapiLookupFieldValue and nlapiSearchRecord, but both of these return the State abbreviation or ID (NY, for example). When I try to set the field value with the state abbreviation/ID, I get an unexpected error.
