Open Custom sub-lists data in new (pop up) window?

Hi,

   From a Customer when I view (or edit) an item from the Contact or Activity sublist the item opens in a new (pop up) window.
 
   Is there a way to achieve this for sublists composed of a custom record type?  (Either via set up or scripting....)
