Tracking inventory availability at time of order

I would love to have a field that shows if an item on a sales order was in stock at the time that the sales order was placed.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

I envision a custom record that is true/false and is triggered to check inventory when the sales order is created.

Can I get some guidance -- my scripting skills are nonexistent and my workflow experience is very basic.  However, any assistance would be appreciated.
