custom entity field that displays customer total sales orders

We're trying to display a customers total sales order amount (or invoice) for a rolling 12 months on their customer record whenever it's loaded through the ui.  I'm pretty sure we'll have to use scripting to make this happen.  If anyone has any suggestions or advice on where to start it would be appreciated.  Thanks!
