Using Search in Default for Custom Item Field :: What am I doing wrong?

So I created a search, and all my fields pull great in this search. Now I want to use this search in defining a field in my Item record.

In theory I should be able to pull the search drop down on the custom item field setup, but its blank. What am I doing wrong? How do I define the search to show in the drop down on the custom field record?
