How to identify category and subcategory?

I am trying to show something different between  categories and subcategories.
NS just allows me to use a category template for both categories and subcategories. My purpose is to use JS to identify which categories are top categories. I was attempting to use "parent category" attribute. It was not working. Because it tells different parent categories names.
