Customize Item drop down to sort by Display Name and NOT Item Name

Hello – I have a requirement to sort the item drop down on transaction forms to “display name” vs. “Item Name”.
I tried the item filter option which I created a saved search and applied the sort there thinking it would pass to the transaction form.
The Item filter saved search is truly designed I guess for “filter” only.

Is there any other workaround to perform this requirement?

We’re hoping we don’t have to swap field values on the item record in order for this to work for their requirement.
