Link Lineitem in SO to special WO

We would like to add a custom field in the sale order at the lineitem level that contains special instructions and have the instructions flow into a custom field in the body of the resulting work order that is created for the special work order item.  Any suggestions on scripting this?  Or an alternate idea to communicate item specific instructions.
