Email Signature - Migration from CRMSDK to FreeMarker

I am in the process of learning FreeMarker and upgrading a few of our HMTL email templates.

I have found the equivalent of the <NLSIGNATURE> using FreeMarker is ${preferences.MESSAGE_SIGNATURE}

The output for this does not includes any line breaks... What is the FreeMarker method for formatting the content to include line breaks, etc.
