Slash ( / ) now acts like a wildcard? oh no!

I have many item numbers that have slashes in them.
And I have many "description" items that have slashes in them.  When I type them into a sales receipt, NS instead on queing in on the fact that I have typed the item # fully and completely, will bring up every item (descriptions, items, non-inventory items, everything) that has a slash in it.

this started with the most recent upgrade.

What gives ?????????  and how do I turn this darn thing OFF!
