HTML entities issue in customer emails

Since 2008.2, our order confirmation emails appear like so

Subtotal A£238.29    
Shipping and Handling (excluding VAT) A£8.51    
VAT A£43.20    
Total A£290.00    

Seems to be a simple HTML entities issue, but I'm pretty sure we have no control over the HTML in this table and this is very unprofessional-looking

Has anyone else spotted similar issues?
