New Release Uses Shipping Items' Display Names?

Since the new release, our Shipping Item dropdowns (in New Customer, Sales Order, etc.) now shows the Display Name instead of the Item Name. This has caused massive headaches for our users as our Display Names are much different than our internal names. Can anyone explain why this was changed and if a fix is available?
