How does automatic shipping cost calculation work?

Hello,

I can't seem to get NS to automatically calculate the cost of shipping our packages. We want it to use FedEx rates plus a handling fee.

Does it only use the weights from the item list or can you get it to use actual weights after fulfillment is complete? Our product weighs next to nothing, but we use a lot of dry ice and blue ice and that's what we charge for. However, that weight is not known until after fulfillment is complete.
