Bar Codes And Extra Characters

When I have our bar code scanner set to a Hard Return vs a Tax.  Netsuite is viewing the hard return as an extra character.  But tab are not viewed this way.  Would anyone know why this might be?  It leads to rework when processing orders when we have to re-set the hand held scanners
