Randomly Backordered In-stock items

I am experiencing a problem where items that are in stock (as many a 7k+ available) show up as backordered in an order when I try and fulfill it.  If I edit the order, and save without making any changes, the item changes to "committed" and I am able to fulfill like nothing ever happened.  Has anyone else experienced this.  This is causing major problems with our fulfillment process, never happened before the new release.
