Combined Part # and Serial # Bar code

I'm new to Netsuite inventory and am trying to figure out how to utilize our current bar code system.  Our bar codes include both the part # (item #) and serial # in the same bar code scan.  I can scan the bar code and Netsuite finds the item but when I scan it into the serial number it won't find just the serial # (was hoping it would recognize a portion of the number and find that serial number tied to that particular item #).

Has anyone had a combined bar code and if so were you successful in using it to scan two different fields in Netsuite?
