Multiple Shipping Routes

I've been asked to look in to using the 'Multiple Shipping Routes' feature. In reviewing the other user forum threads around this feature (dating back to 2009), it appears that it used to have some significant problems. There is also the more recent issue with webstore purchases and multiple shipping routes. So, my question is this - is anyone using this feature successfully? What were the issues that you encountered? Any problems with scripting around this feature? What are some of the "gotcha's" that need to be watched for?
