Best practices for Receipt and Put Away (Manual Processes)

I am interested in best practices used for receipt of materials and put away to bins.  How do warehouse operators receive instructions in a manual process?  Are folks directing put away from the receipt of materials (to the bin)? OR receiving virtually and utilizing / forwarding the put away worksheet to the operator?  Thanks for sharing best practices.
