Saved Search - Balance Sheet Account Balance

I want to create a saved search for use in a KPI portlet that contains a group of Balance Sheet Accounts (in essence, a trial balance with filters for specific accounts).  First I tried using an Account Search, but this does not seem to work for a date range other than "all".  then I tried a Transaction search, but this only gave me the change in the account balance during the period specified...great for an Income Statement Account, but no good for a Balance Sheet account.

Any suggestions?
