how to count number of lines

Looking for some help creating a transaction search which would list the count of transactions by users, and the number of lines in total for each transaction type by user.  So for a given user, if there are 5 sales orders entered, and 2 lines on 3 of the sales orders and 1 line on the other 2 sales orders, then it would say count is 5, and the number of lines is 8.  Thanks.
