Email alert based on transaction column field

Hi, I have been trying to find a solution to this for a while now. Im trying to send alerts based on a change to a transaction column field. As there is a limitation on workflows/saved search email functionality to only work on the transaction body fields, im really struggling to do this without scripting.

Has anyone got a work around for this with the ability to still use the standard email alert functionality on the saved search? I.e not have to add users to a script to receive an email.

The criteria would be along the lines of…send when a sales order has been created and only send again on update to a certain transaction column field..I.e item change or item price decrease/increase.
