Web Services Beta 2.5 - Serial Numbers on Sales Orders vs. Fulfillments

In the Web Services 2.5 interface, the serialNumbers property on the salesOrderItem is of type RecordRef, and on item fulfillment lines and invoices it's a string.  On item fulfillment lines you can enter multiple serial numbers separated with a comma.  Is it possible to enter multiple serial numbers on a salesOrderItem?
