Posting Period

I'm creating a cash sale via web services and the Posting Period is a required field. The postingPeriod property is of type RecordRef but there doesn't seem to be a 'PostingPeriod' type for the RecordRef object.

Can someone specify a method of setting the Posting Period for a cash sale?
