Searching a custom list

I am trying to query a custom list by providing the text value of one of its element and expecting the internal id back (since this is what I'm pluging in somewhere else). I have gone crazy looking for documentation on this, but can't get my finger on it. Is this even possible?

In more practical terms, I have a custom list with values "Red", "Blue", "Yellow", "Green", etc... I need to be able to request the internal id for "Yellow", and hopefully get "3" back.
