Searching custom field suddenly invalid

Hi,
I'm trying to search jobs based on a custom field. Code has been solid for months. After last upgrade my search status returns:
Code=INVALID_SEARCH_FIELD_OBJ] custentity46 is not a valid search custom field.

Java code that sets up the search field is :

new SearchStringCustomField("custentity46", SearchStringFieldOperator.is,  "searchValue") );

Anyone have any ideas. This is making me crazy.
