Adding Address to Exsisting Customer

I am trying to update a customer record and add a new address to their address book using the PHP SDK 2012.  I get a response saying 'INSUFFICIENT_PERMISSION- You do not have permissions to set a value for element balance due to one of the following reason'.  I am only trying to update the address book, the 'balance due' field is not update able even in the UI.  So My question is, can I set a flag to skip everything but the address book or do I need a special user that can update all aspects of the customer?
