Using SuiteAnalytics Connects rather than web services?

I use web services to download and upload NS data with a C# program.  I see there is an ADO .NET Connects provider. Is it only for downloading (reporting) and not for uploading also.  Is there any performance or other reason to use Connects rather than web services?  Maybe use connects to retrieve data and web services for updates?  Or does Connects work for uploads too?
