performance on sandbox vs. production

Is there a noticeable difference in performance between sandbox and production?
I'm creating customer records using addList in batches of ten.
The effective throughput is about three records per minute.
If I use larger batches I seem to get more errors.
Is there anything that can be done to improve the throughput?
