Stuck on 'Please enter a payment method' error on Sales Order add

I am attempting to add a sales order but get a returned error of 'Please enter a payment method'.

In the Sales Order object I am sending I have:
     [paymentMethod] => RecordRef Object         (             [internalId] => 4             [externalId] =>              [type] =>              [name] =>          )
4 is a valid payment method ID in our netsuite system.  Does anyone have any ideas why NetSuite isn't accepting this payment method?
