Best Practice to Retrieve Transaction ID of a new record after SAVE

I have a project that is deriving values from a third party service on transactions. I have to store the transaction number from NetSuite in this third party application as part of an audit trail. If my calculation takes effect upon SAVE but i dont have a tranid until after SAVE how to I get that value and pass it along to my third party application?
